Safety of Chiropractic Treatments

There is a lot of information, and misinformation, about the safety of chiropractic treatments. How can you know what is safe? What are the risks of chiropractic treatments and how can you avoid them?

No healthcare treatment is 100% safe, but the risks associated with chiropractic care are minimal.

It is typical to experience minor discomfort after an adjustment, of course. Your joints and muscles will often feel as though you have taken part in a strenuous exercise routine. Most of this discomfort will fade within 24 hours of the treatment, however.

There have also been some concerns from patients who have received certain specific neck adjustments who have gone on to experience a stroke or the dissection of a vertebral artery. However, research and available evidence suggests that these patients had a pre-existing condition that caused the further problems. The presence of chiropractic care appears to not be a factor in these cases.

As always, remember to discuss not only the risks of chiropractic treatment but also those of any other treatment with your medical professional. The more specific you are about your pain and symptoms, the easier it will be for the doctor to make a diagnosis and recommendation for treatment.

Chiropractors are very well trained in their field. They not only obtain a pre-med degree before entering chiropractic school, but then are trained in all aspects of health and wellness including four to five years of intensive study and hands-on clinical practice before beginning their practice. In this way, they’re better able to understand how chiropractic care works on all parts of the body.

The best way to determine the safety of chiropractic treatment is to:

  • Research your doctor
  • Talk with them about your specific needs
  • Follow up regularly and discuss any questions
  • Consider all potential forms of treatment

Chiropractic care is a safe and effective treatment option for a majority of individuals. Talk to your doctor about your needs and see what the best treatment options are for your condition and pain profile.
